In this episode of The Briefing Room, host Mike Wagers sits down with Santa Clara County Sheriff Bob Jonsen for a wide-ranging conversation about four decades in law enforcement. Before he ever wore a badge, Jonsen was the Imperial biker who crashes into a tree in Return of the Jedi. He went on to spend nearly 28 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, served as police chief in Menlo Park and Palo Alto, and was elected sheriff of Santa Clara County in 2022, a post his great-great-uncle held in the 1890s.
Jonsen shares how a friend’s sarcastic “they’d never hire you” pushed him to apply, and how the work of James Q. Wilson, George Kelling, and Mark Moore shaped crime-reduction strategies that earned him the James Q. Wilson Award twice. He and Mike dig into the current backlash over ALPRs, AI, and surveillance technology, why one misstep shouldn’t be painted across an entire profession, and the shared responsibility of agencies and vendors to build in transparency and guardrails.
The conversation also compares leading as an appointed chief versus an elected sheriff, and why Jonsen still sees partnership with county leaders as essential. Much of the episode centers on officer wellness: the health wake-up call that led him to mindfulness, his first hire as sheriff (a wellness coordinator), the Courageous Heart program with Stanford and the Compassion Institute, and the new Roll Call Listening Campaign, which uses original songs to open hard conversations about stress, suicide, and drinking culture.
Ultimately, Sheriff Jonsen makes the case that the profession trains people to do the job but rarely teaches them to survive it, and that workforce wellness should be every agency’s number one priority.
